Fortuny, the Artistic Mastery of Fabric

by Jennifer Davis Bricken on Dec 23, 2023 category Uncategorized

the artistry of Mariano Fortuny y Madrazo

the fabrics

Fortuny Fabrics.  Synonymous with Timeless Beauty.  Unique works of Art.  So visually designed that they have been described as “layered colors of proprietary dyes and patented artisanal application of gold and silver powders”.

the beginnings

“From his early beginnings, Fortuny’s deep curiosity about how things work, what they are made of, and how they become what they are led Mariano Fortuny y Madrazo to approach work through interdisciplinary lenses of art, technology, and science. “

Words like “authentic antiquity” have been used to describe Fortuny’s textile design which were handmade in Venice in 1907.   Fortuny is an artist and creator inspired by Venice, Greece, Egypt, Florence, Persia, Asia, South America and the Far East.  His work is innovative from transforming history to formulating his own dyes and pigments, all based on historic techniques and practices as well as the influence of his designs.

The Fortuny factory, manufacturing the collaborative work by Mariano Fortuny and his wife Henriette Negrin, is and has always been located on Giudecca Island, a lagoon in Northern Italy since its opening in 1922.  It is built on the grounds of an ancient convent.  You can visit the gardens and the showroom, but the factory and the weaving process remains secret.

Fortuny was part of a family of renowned artists. He was born in Granada, Spain and lived his formative years in Paris, France and then in Venice, Italy.   He began his early work shifting from painting to set design and stage lighting and then to fabric and printed textiles and then back to painting in his retirement.  The iconic Delphos plisse silk dress is one of his most famous pieces in his collection and launched his work worldwide.

The Fortuny Museum can be visited in Venice and include printmaking, typography, with presses and etchings.  There is a textile laboratory of gowns and fabrics, original matrices for printing and models for pattern cutting and a theatre with wooden stages made by Mariano to experiment with lighting and stage effects.

I have always been inspired by nature, travel, history, fashion, textiles and innovative artwork, and I will continue to be drawn to the work of Fortuny.

Sustainability in Interior Design

Interior Design and Architecture is in every facet of our lives.  It is our shelter, the spaces we inhabit.   Designers plan and create solutions for both residential and commercial uses, both small and large in scale, both interior and exterior spaces.  With this responsibility comes choices that are inspired by, influenced by and also dictate the following:

structure (functional and artistic), the program (function, use of the space), the economics (funding and maintenance, energy saving), the aesthetics (visual elements), and the location (culture, climate and geography).

There exists a social responsibility to take care of the natural resources that we are given and from which all things are made.  Managing these things well and even leaving something better than we found it is a mindset that I am inspired by.

Sustainable Interior Design and Architecture can help meet these goals in the design industry.

Words like Reduce, Reuse and Recycle are at the core of sustainable thinking and guide choices that will not leave a negative footprint on our world.  Assessing how choices affect not only the environment, but also economy and society help guide this process.  Thought processes in design like passive heating and cooling and using natural light all use resources that we already have to fulfill design requirements in some instances, especially in residential design.

The U.S. Green Building Council operates LEED, the world’s most widely used green building system.  More than 100,000 buildings are participants as of recent.  LEED has transformed how buildings and communities are designed, constructed, and operated, “enabling an environmentally and socially responsible, healthy, and prosperous environment that improves the quality of life.”

There are many product manufacturers who use processes that consider its environmental impact. Using recycled content, a renewable resource, and reducing toxic chemicals and environmental impacts throughout the life cycle of a material are all important in this thought process.  Even the processes of distribution, manufacturing and end of life management are considered when selecting materials that would contribute towards a sustainable future.

“Green” products and sustainable design have been an interest of mine for many years.  In the design industry, there are many conferences, websites and publications to learn more about these approaches. Manufacturers and vendors are knowledgable about their companies and what they were doing to create products that would contribute to the mindset of sustainability.  As both an art teacher and interior designer, I am able to have students create works of art out of found objects and items that they would not consider typical art materials.  From trash to fashion to recycled art, we explored the ideas of artistic expression and re use.  This includes thinking about creative ways to use a product in a different way.

When I am working with a residential client, I consider what can be reused, repurposed, reupholstered, reworked in a way that we can use an item in our design while still meeting our design aesthetic.  Using found objects in lighting design and as accents in design is a great way to reuse even other’s items that they no longer have a need for.  Antiques fall into this category, as well.  Even repurposing items such as an oriental rug.  A rug could be cut into smaller pieces and used as pillows, stools, a bench seat or ottoman to name a few.

When planning dinners and / or celebrations, how can we reuse items for different occasions or buy items that have recycled content or are biodegradable? See these two past blog posts, summer holiday place setting for Memorial Day and the Fourth of July, Outdoor Gathering, A Summer Dinner Party for ideas regarding some environmental materials and reusing basic components for multiple uses. I will be posting more of these resources in an upcoming post! Borrowing items from friends and / or renting items is a good way to expand décor.  Being creative with a kit of parts can be a great way to have a base to design from and add seasonal or specific elements to the design to make it one of a kind.

I recently began listening to the Chairish podcast.  Mostly because they interviewed different designers and I love to be inspired by different points of view.  I soon realized that this is an organization that buys and sells used items in design.  It is high end and ranges from Furniture, Art, Lighting, Décor, Tabletop + Bar, Bed + Bath, Rugs, and Outdoor.  They even have a feature for others to consign their items.

Shopping Locally for products for residential design is also a great way to think sustainably.  Our supply chain and lead times have forced some to make these decisions out of necessity.

Even using social media to post items you would like to sell to others works towards reuse.  We don’t always have the option to select or make every choice a sustainable choice, but when we can we are helping make a bigger impact for Sustainability. One last note, Sustainability needs to be good design and does not have to look like recycled cardboard. I love this image from Anna Bode’s website!

Outdoor Gathering, A Summer Dinner Party

by Jennifer Davis Bricken on Jul 10, 2022 category Uncategorized
back yard table set up

Who, What, When?

This past May, I had the opportunity to help host an outdoor graduation dinner party for my niece in Auburn, Alabama. Celebrating friends and family is a great reason to have a dinner party!

I am sharing images and items I used recently for this dinner party. The hosts for this event included family and close friends. Our group got together to plan this event by first getting some ideas from our guest of honor! She loves barbecue (especially cheese biscuits)! We had a theme!

Planning the Event

schematic design collage

We created a list of items we needed and began designing this event. My niece’s school colors were blue and white. Wanting the event to be casual and fun, I looked for items that would express this design direction.  Wooden tree stump trays, galvanized metal items, blue and white gingham table cloths and napkins, natural woven placemats, and white hydrangeas made up the design list. We used lime green as an accent.

To inspire a design,  take into consideration who your event is for and the guests. What is the event celebrating and what time of day and / or season is your event?

The Set Up

We had over sixty guests and set up round and rectangle tables in the backyard of one of the hosts. We used rattan folding chairs and white tablecloths as our base. The table design varied from using the wooden tree stump trays on the round tables to burlap runners on the rectangles food, dessert and beverage tables. Details such as clear, tall water bottles and small glass vases with votives were used on the tables. I had several inspiration images using rattan vases. We knew we wanted to use 10-12 of these on the tables. Using a clear glass mason jar, we wrapped a piece of rattan around the jar and held the sides together with fishing line. This was an easy, less expensive way to create this look and still be able to use the jars and material in other ways.  We used green and white flowers in the clear and galvanized vases to add natural elements to the table design. Pictures of the guest of honor from childhood to her senior year are displayed on gold place card holders to add personal expression.

Final Thoughts

When I am creating a design for an event, I am always looking for ways to build a kit of parts and use it for various designs. This party was a good example of securing many of those basic items that I have and will continue to use for more events.  More to come on this topic so make sure to subscribe for new posts!

We had a beautiful spring night for our event! The barbecue, mac and cheese, baked beans, and cheese biscuits were a hit! Of course, we could not have a barbecue without lemonade and southern sweet tea. The dessert menu included a Marshmallow Fudge Brownie dessert (I will share in upcoming post) and “diploma cookies”. It was a perfect night for an outdoor gathering to celebrate friendship, family and a graduation!

summer holiday place setting for Memorial Day and the Fourth of July

by Jennifer Davis Bricken on Jun 24, 2022 category Uncategorized

“from every mountainside, let freedom ring”

Memorial Day and the Fourth of July are holidays we typically celebrate with family and friends. Whether at the lake, the beach, the mountains or in your own home town, we gather to celebrate our freedom and thank those in the military who have sacrificed and fought for our freedom. I am sharing some really easy ways to celebrate our holiday and add inspiration from Old Glory with a little red, white and blue in your place settings!

items used to create these Memorial Day and Fourth of July place settings

the pieces and parts

For instance, there are so many ways to use paper plates and napkins to create a fun, layered look for any event. This is so easy and inexpensive and can be changed from breakfast to lunch to dinner over a long holiday weekend. It does not require you to buy specific pieces of dinner ware and / or glass ware that you will only use on a few occasions. It is also easy to load up and carry anywhere. I am working with just a few items to design these place settings.

these first two images show both dark and light woven placemat, they can be alternated to get the right contrast
layering the dinner napkin and cocktail napkin with the plates
rotated, dinner and dessert plate layered
the contrast of large scale pattern, texture, and small scale pattern
the most simple, only using the napkins and plates (the cocktail napkin folds out to show the Stars and Stripes)
pattern, pattern, pattern! the blue and white straws can be used all weekend
dinner, salad and dessert plates stacked
folding the napkin and letting it hang over the table edge, rotating dessert or salad plate
my favorite using the dinner napkin, placemat, dinner plate, cocktail napkin and dessert or salad plate and straw

getting the look

Now that you have the basics, you are ready to create an expressive design that celebrates Memorial Day and the Fourth of July! Finish the details by adding a galvanized bucket with some cold drinks and a beautiful summer fern and you have place setting that is easy to achieve and looks great! Using versatile items that you can have on hand and can use for multiple table designs is a great way to minimize, not only cost, but also the space required to store all items when you are not using. For another fun, summer table setting, see my post showing a place setting for a summer brunch.

The following are links to the items from above. Have fun creating!

Brunch Place Setting & Sautéed Spinach with Fried Egg Recipe

by Jennifer Davis Bricken on Jun 16, 2022 category Uncategorized

Celebrate any day!

design elements in this image linked below

Being a creative person, My brain never stops thinking of ways to organize and express artistic design elements. This is why flower arranging and table design has become so interesting to me. It is easy to do and I don’t even need an important holiday or event to grab a few seasonal paper plates, napkins and flowers to celebrate any day! This brunch table design and recipe for sautéed spinach with a fried egg is a great way to get started. I am working on developing a group of items that can be used over and over for place setting, but with varying accents to express different design ideas. This will be a like a table design kit of parts. More to come on this idea in my outdoor gathering post and a menu category to share these items.

Why I love Brunch!

I am not an early riser, so a late breakfast / early lunch (brunch) is about my speed. It is also my favorite category of food. You can get both sweet and savory in one meal. This recipe focuses on the savory, but you can add fresh fruit or a cinnamon roll, as well. We have four chickens so I am always looking for creative ways to use our fresh eggs. I like to eat super healthy and have a dairy allergy so vitamin D sources interest me, as well. Add a little more coffee and fresh orange juice and I am ready to conquer my day!

The Design Elements

This place setting design can be used for a bride’s maid luncheon, wedding day brunch, birthday and / or anniversary celebration, etc. Layering items in art and design is an element I experiment with a lot. This place setting uses a hot pink fretwork napkin (unfolded) as the first layer building with a woven water hyacinth (rattan) placemat, a plastic mint gold rimmed dinner plate, a folded hummingbird napkin, a moss green square salad / dessert plate and finally the sautéed spinach and fried egg. The gold plastic utensils are an important detail to compliment the edge of the plate. Don’t forget the little things! I added a few cut flowers (most from my yard) because flowers are just beautiful! You can click on links above to get more information about these products!
